Why Small Towns Need Local Markets.
Drive through enough small towns, and you start to notice the same things.
Empty storefronts. Fewer gathering places. Main streets that used to bustle now sit quiet. Over time, many communities have lost something important.
There was a time when people knew the owners behind the businesses they supported. They knew where their food came from. Saturday mornings meant running into neighbors downtown instead of ordering another box online. Family farms became fewer. Local ownership was replaced by distant corporations. Many people no longer know the person raising their food, fixing their equipment, or running the businesses in their own communities.
And when those relationships disappear, communities begin to feel different.
Not all at once. Slowly.
People become more isolated. Local dollars leave town and rarely come back. The sense of pride that once held small towns together starts to fade.
We see it happening across rural America. We also believe small towns are still worth investing in.
Local markets matter because they bring people an opportunity to come back together. They create spaces where conversations happen naturally again. They give families access to healthier food raised by people they actually know and trust. These markets remind communities that local businesses and farms are still here, still working, and still worth supporting.
That is a large part of why we continue building Food and Flowers and the Shop Local Market here in Charter Oak. Not because we think a market changes a town overnight. But because strong communities are rebuilt one relationship at a time.
One conversation.One meal.One handshake.One Sunday afternoon downtown.
Please share this message with someone else who still believes small towns matter. We would love to see you at The Shop Local Market this Sunday afternoon in Charter Oak.

Why We Don’t Raise Our Egg Prices
“When eggs at the store are $5.99/dozen, ours are $3.00. When eggs at the store are $0.89/dozen, ours are $3.00”.
We recognize the fluctuating market conditions. We acknowledge the rising production costs. We fully understand the inflationary pressures on producers AND consumers. While many businesses feel compelled to raise prices to maintain profitability, we have made a conscious decision not to raise our egg prices. Yes, we could charge more for our eggs. Our decision is grounded in our commitment to our customers.
Our mission is to provide healthy, locally produced food to our customers. We understand that eggs are a staple food for many households, and increasing food costs can significantly impact a family’s budget. Maintaining stable prices ensures that our customers can continue to access high-quality farm-fresh eggs. Most of our egg customers also purchase our Heritage Breed Pork, Grass-fed lamb, and other locally produced products at our Farm Stand.
By keeping our egg prices steady, we foster trust and demonstrate that we value our customers. We aim to build long-term relationships rather than focusing on short-term profits. This loyalty translates into a dedicated customer base that appreciates our consistency and fairness. Raising prices might seem easy to offset increased production costs, but providing affordable, nutritious foods aligns with our values.
It might seem counterintuitive, but keeping our egg prices steady is a long-term investment in the community's health and our farm's sustainability.
Thank you for your continued support!!
